Structure-Property Relationships at the Nano-Bio Interface: Engineering the Nanoparticle Surface for Immunomodulation

Each year, a variety of novel nanomaterials are being developed with the objective of treating different diseases. However, since nanomaterials are foreign to the human body, one of the principal factors that limit their use is the encounter with the first line of defense from the body: the immune system. If this interaction is not taken into account, an undesired recognition takes place and the efficiency of nanoparticle based therapies is dramatically reduced. As such, understanding the rules that govern this recognition is of prime importance in the field of nanomedicine. Following this line of thoughts (the driving force), the work described in this dissertation takes a systematic approach to understand and use the relationship between immunological responses and the chemical nature of the nanoparticle surface. We first explored the chemical rules of the immunological recognition, to then re-engineer our materials based on the acquired knowledge, setting a final goal in the development of new nanomaterials capable of modulating immune responses. Our findings demonstrated not only the vast potential of nanomaterials for their use in immunotherapies, but also the power of Chemistry in the development of these systems

La inclusión social desde la cultura visual y las prácticas contemporáneas del arte

This article reflects on the social inclusion in social and educational programmes since a visual culture perspective. Is considered the work with contemporary art resources and the educative possibilities including new practices in public space and the place of technologies.Este artículo reflexiona acerca del tema de la inclusión social en programas educativos y sociales desde una perspectiva de cultura visual. Se considera el trabajo con los contenidos del arte contemporáneo y sus posibilidades educativas incluyendo nuevas prácticas en el espacio público y el lugar de las tecnologías

Categorizing sources of risk and the estimated magnitude of risk

The social perception of risk is considered a multidimensional task, yet little attention has been paid to the cognitive components that organize sources of risk, despite their having been discovered in various research studies. This study attempts to concretely analyze the cultural dimension involved in those processes. In the first phase, we tried to discover to what extent sources of risk are organized into the same categories by people from different countries. In order to do so, two groups of participants were formed: 60 Spanish psychology students and 60 Chilean psychology students classified 43 sources of risk into different groups according to the criteria they found appropriate. The two samples classified risk into identical groups: acts of violence, drugs, electricity and home appliances, household chemicals, chemicals in the environment, public construction projects, transportation, sports, and natural disasters. In a second study, 100 Spanish and 84 Chilean students were asked to evaluate the magnitude of the damage incurred by 17 sources of risk. In both groups, it was observed that the evaluation of damage resulting from each source of risk was affected by its category.La percepción social del riesgo se considera una tarea multidimensional, sin embargo se ha prestado poca atención a los componentes cognitivos que organizan las fuentes del riesgo, a pesar de que se han descubierto en varios estudios de investigación. Concretamente, este estudio intenta analizar la dimensión cultural implicada en esos procesos. En primer lugar, intentamos descubrir hasta qué punto personas de diferentes países organizan las fuentes de riesgo en las mismas categorías. Para ello, se formaron dos grupos de participantes: 60 estudiantes de psicología españoles y 60 estudiantes de psicología chilenos clasificaron 43 fuentes de riesgo en diferentes grupos según los criterios más apropiados para ellos. Las dos muestras clasificaron el riesgo en grupos idénticos: actos de violencia, drogas, electricidad y electrodomésticos, productos químicos domésticos, productos químicos en el medioambiente, proyectos de construcción públicos, transporte, deportes y desastres naturales. En un segundo estudio, 100 estudiantes españoles y 84 chilenos evaluaron la magnitud del daño provocado por 17 fuentes de riesgo. On the characterization of NaDEHP/n-heptane nonaqueous reverse micelles: The effect of the polar solvent

The behavior of two polar solvents, ethylene glycol (EG) and dimethylformamide (DMF), entrapped in sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (NaDEHP)/n-heptane reverse micelles (RMs) was investigated using dynamic light scattering (DLS), molecular probe absorption and FT-IR spectroscopy. DLS results reveal the formation of RMs containing EG and DMF as a polar component. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report where both polar solvents are entrapped by the NaDEHP surfactant to effectively create RMs. We use the solvatochromism behavior of the molecular probe, 1-methyl-8-oxyquinolinum betaine (QB), and FT-IR spectroscopy to investigate the physicochemical properties of the non-aqueous RMs. Our results demonstrate that the NaDEHP surfactant interacts through hydrogen bonds with EG at the EG/NaDEHP interface and this interaction is responsible for destroying the bulk structure of pure solvent EG when entrapped in NaDEHP RMs. On the other hand, when DMF is incorporated inside the RMs the bulk structure of DMF is destroyed upon encapsulation by the Na-DMF interaction at the DMF/NaDEHP interface. Our results are completely different than the one observed for DMF/n-heptane/AOT. Our results show how the physicochemical properties, such as micropolarity, microviscosity and hydrogen bond interaction, of nonaqueous NaDEHP/n-heptane RMs interfaces can be dramatically changed by simply using different non-aqueous polar solvents. Interacción con juguetes para usuarios con discapacidad usando equipos con S.O. Android

El proyecto realizado, trata de una aplicación desarrollada en la plataforma Android, orientada a personas con algún tipo de discapacidad sensorial o psíquica. Dicha aplicación fomenta el uso y la integración de dispositivos móviles en este tipo de sector de población. Está pensada, para que, un usuario con discapacidad, pueda interactuar con ella y de forma transparente a él, se ha creado un sistema mediante el cual, se registra todo el comportamiento que ese usuario ha tenido durante el tiempo de uso de la aplicación, con el fin de llevar un seguimiento del mismo; evaluar si existen cambios en él; determinar si son necesarios algunos cambios en la aplicación que favorezcan una mejoría en cuanto al uso y consecución de resultados en el paciente, etc. Se ha combinado el uso de una aplicación instalada sobre un sistema operativo de libre distribución, concretamente Android, con un juguete de código abierto, como es Sphero. Eso ha permito el desarrollo de una aplicación perfectamente ajustada a los requisitos funcionales definidos, con una robustez y eficiencia similar a una aplicación de sistemas operativos móviles cerrados. Es importarte remarcar, que la primera finalidad de este proyecto es ofrecer la posibilidad de usar un juguete, como Sphero, que está orientado a un sector de población sin discapacidad, haciendo uso de cualquier dispositivo móvil, a personas con diferentes grados de discapacidad sensorial, motora y psíquica. Siempre clarificando, que no existe la posibilidad de usar esta aplicación para cualquier tipo y grado de discapacidad, ya que, ello supondría, un proyecto de una envergadura enorme. El hecho de usar un dispositivo móvil, es un derecho, que todos tenemos. Y por ello, se espera que tras la lectura y comprensión de este proyecto, se motive a los lectores a seguir desarrollando aplicaciones para que cualquier usuario, con discapacidad o no, tenga las mismas oportunidades de interactuación con dispositivos móviles. The carried out project, is an application developed on the Android platform , aimed at people with some kind of sensory or mental disability . This application encourages the use and integration of mobile devices in this type of population sector. It is designed to be interacted by a disable person and transparently to that user, it has been created a system by which all behavior, that user has had during the time of use of the application, is recorded, that’s to keep track of it ; assess whether there are changes in it, determine if changes are needed in the application that favor an improvement in the use and achieving patient outcomes , etc. . It has combined the use of an application installed on an open source operating system, namely Android, an open source toy , as is Sphero . That has made it possible to develop an application perfectly adjusted to the functional requirements defined with a robustness and efficiency similar to a mobile OS application closed. It is important to note, that the first aim of this project is to offer the possibility of using a toy, like Sphero , which is geared to a sector of the population without disabilities , using any mobile device , for people with different degrees of sensory impairment , motor and mental . Always clarifying that there is no possibility to use this application for any type and degree of disability, because the magnitude of the project would have been infinitely greater. The fact of using a mobile device, is a right we all have. And so, it is expected that upon reading and understanding of this project, motivate readers to continue developing applications for any user , disabled or not, have the same opportunities for interaction with mobile devices

Valuaciones y legitimidad monetaria: la legitimidad del dinero en un sistema de becas de apoyo económico en la Universidad Pública

En este articulo busco mostrar cómo se legitima un tipo de dinero especifico: el dinero de una beca de apoyo económico a las trayectorias estudiantiles en una Universidad Pública argentina situada en el conurbano bonaerense. Para ello propongo una combinación de dos perspectivas de análisis: la sociología de las valuaciones (monetarias) y la sociología del dinero. A partir de ello, analizo principalmente los dispositivos de juicio desplegados desde el sistema de becas de la Universidad y muestro cuales son los efectos prácticos de las valuaciones en la política universitaria en cuestión

Generalized Weierstrass semigroups and their Poincaré series

Producción CientíficaWe investigate the structure of the generalized Weierstraß semigroups at several points on a curve defined over a finite field. We present a description of these semigroups that enables us to deduce properties concerned with the arithmetical structure of divisors supported on the specified points and their corresponding Riemann-Roch spaces.
